MANILA, Philippines - With the rainy season expected to peak in September and October, health authorities are bracing for a rise in dengue incidents in the next two months. "Hanggang October pa ito ... Kahapon nag-uulan na naman, yan ang hinahanap ng lamok (The rains will last until October. On Sunday, it rained very hard. Those are the conditions dengue-carrying mosquitoes are looking for to breed)," Tayag said in an interview on dzBB radio. Tayag said that from Jan. 1 to Aug. 2 this year, some 19,658 cases were recorded compared to 22,028 last year. There were 195 deaths recorded this year, including 37 in Metro Manila. But in Metro Manila, he said there was an increase from 2,432 last year to 5,778 this year. He said the Health Department will keep an eye particularly on the Caloocan-Navotas-Malabon-Valenzuela (Camanava) area in northern Metro Manila. "Ang Camanava, mas pinamumugaran ng lamok (Camanava is vulnerable to dengue-carrying mosquitoes)," he said, noting the area is flood-prone. On the other hand, he said they have not yet taken into account a reported surge in dengue cases in Tierra Monte subdivision in San Mateo town in Rizal province. Earlier reports said at least six had died out of the 25 cases recorded since January this year. |
